When we talk about defunding the police, we must in the same breath talk about refunding the communities so those resources can be used for alternatives to the police. Our communities must together engage in radical imagination to live into the question: what does a world without police look like? Who do we call when we need help? How do we build structures that address underlying problems that cause violence?
Fortunately, there are countless people who are dreaming and imagining alongside us - you can read more at the Learning More page of this website.
For now, though our current services are underfunded because the police force uses and hoards so many resources, there are some people we can call when we need help. We may be able to call on neighbors or friends in some cases. And there are local organizations who can help with some issues.
Many of these calls will not result in a rapid response, and some of the organizations may end up calling in police as well. We’re not there yet. But our hope is that we lower the chances of police being in neighborhoods, surveilling you and your neighbors and looking for excuses for traffic stops.
